Virginia Master Naturalists – Holston Rivers Chapter 2024 In Review: The Virginia Master Naturalist program is a statewide corps of trained volunteers providing education, science, and stewardship to benefit natural resource conservation in their communities. As part of their many activities in 2024, Holston Rivers Chapter Master Naturalist volunteers (1) conducted cleanups, habitat restoration, and trail work in parks and natural areas (Highlight – Volunteers continued restoration work at the Emory & Henry Cemetery, removing invasive plants and planting native species.), (2) contributed data to studies of wildlife and environmental health (Highlight – Volunteers helped conduct biological monitoring of water quality in local streams.), and (3) gave the community new opportunities to learn about nature from knowledgeable leaders and to spend guided time outdoors (Highlight – Volunteers organized the Salty Bird F, connecting people to birds and wetlands in Saltville.) Statistics included 86 volunteers contributing 3,613 service hours valued at $121K; 17 sites stewarded; 11+ scientific, monitoring, and inventory studies supported; 6,001 contacts made through education and outreach;10 partnerships with local organizations.
